What is post mix?
Post mix is a dispense method where the drink is assembled at the moment of pour — the syrup and the carbonated water meet after leaving their containers, hence "post" mix.
A post mix drink is made from three inputs:
- Concentrated syrup, supplied in a bag-in-box
- Filtered mains water, chilled and carbonated on site
- CO2, which both carbonates the water and pushes the syrup through the lines
Because you're only paying to transport concentrate rather than finished liquid, post mix beverage costs per serve are substantially lower than canned or bottled equivalents — and a single 12-litre box replaces a significant volume of packaged stock in your cellar.
How a post mix system works
A complete post mix drinks dispenser setup has six core components.
Bag-in-box syrup (BIB)
Concentrated syrup in a sealed bag inside a cardboard carton, stored in the cellar or under-counter. A connector clips onto the bag and draws syrup through a line to the dispense point.
BIB pumps
Gas-driven pumps that move syrup from the box to the tower. These sit between the CO2 supply and the syrup lines.
CO2 supply
A cylinder, or a bulk tank in higher-volume sites, providing gas for both carbonation and syrup propulsion.
Carbonator
Combines filtered water with CO2 under pressure to produce carbonated water at the correct volume of carbonation.
Water filtration
Removes chlorine, sediment and off-flavours from mains water, and protects the equipment from scale. In hard water areas this is not optional. Filtration directly determines both drink quality and equipment lifespan.
Chiller and dispense point
An ice bank or remote cooler drops the finished drink to serving temperature, and the drink is poured via a dispense tower or a dispense gun, common in cocktail bars and kitchens where one nozzle serves multiple flavours plus soda and water.
The result is a consistently chilled, correctly carbonated post mix drink poured in seconds, with no fridge space consumed by packaged stock.
